When Giving Has Become So Much More

Please accept my blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough.” Thus he urged him, and he took it.

Genesis 33:11 ESV

The first time I read this passage when I was still new in faith, I thought to myself someday I want to say the same thing to people whom I will share my blessings with. There is nothing more joyful than ackowledging the goodness of the Lord in our lives. Instead of pride because you are able to give and people will owe you, you are humbled because you know that there is nothing that you have that does not come from the Lord. There’s this newfound confidence of living in abundance not because of worldly possessions but because of the grace we experience from God that we overflow to share what we have received. Truly, the statement “… I have enough” is very profound, it does not simply mean that we give when we have excess but in its deepest sense it means that we now have all that we need because we have God, Him alone is enough so when we give, we give like Him. What a change in perspective!

Context: This verse was when Esau met Jacob for the first time since Jacob fled to avoid Esau’s wrath for stealing his blessing from Isaac. After 20 years of working for Laban and building his own household in Paddan-aram, God asked Jacob to go back to his father’s land. Full of fear returning home, Jacob obeyed and the Lord’s presence stayed with him as he came face-to-face with his brother whom he hadn’t seen in a long time and who had forgiven him.
