To Fear Or Not To Fear

and said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.” Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.” The people stood far off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.

Exodus 20:19‭-‬21 ESV

I find this passage interesting because at my initial glance, I got to think why have their fear of the Lord caused the Israelites to avoid God speaking to them directly. Sure, God caused them to fear but we can also take that God wanted to commune with His people that was why He came down to the mountain in the first place. Therefore, avoiding talking to God was their choice.

As I reflect on this passage more, we are not different with the Israelites. Sometimes, when we commit sins against God we tend to distance ourselves from Him and not talk to Him out of shame and feeling of unworthiness. Furthermore, the guilt we experience is a feeling planted by God so we will know if what we do offend Him. It is then now our choice if we will come near to Him (just like what Moses did) or do the opposite. One must argue that God is holy and we are not which is very true. However, we have Jesus who is the Son of God and is God to mediate for us. Through Him we have the confidence that we can stand in front of the Father because the of Sons’sacrifice on the cross. The same reason why we have now the privilege to talk to our Lord our God at anytime and anyplace.

Soli Deo Gloria!
